A red-pink, very branching algae which measures 0.5-1.5 cm long. Filamentous, erect stalks, rooted to the substrate or other algae by rhizoids. The dense mantles that form, with a cotton-like appearance that reach 1 cm in thickness are characteristic. The central cells are cylindrical not cortical. The main branches are 150-300 cm long and 40-60 cm wide.

It propagates both by means of sexual reproduction and vegetative propagation. The presence and absence of A. preissii is favoured by sedimentation.
