Description 1

Medium sized fish (some 18 cm long). Robust, round body, with a tall, laterally compressed and fairly short profile. Short caudal panduncle and the caudal fin is wide at its base with an almost straight profile. 26-28 scales in longitudinal line. Variable colourings, generally a yellow, olive green, grey, brown or reddish base with 6-7 dark vertical bars on the body.

Biology 1

A very territorial species in reproduction period, depositing eggs on stones or wood. Both the father and mother take care of the eggs. It is an omnivore with opportunistic feeding habits.

Habitat 1

Inhabits calm, slow or still waters, including ponds, with an abundance of sub-aquatic vegetation. It tolerates low water temperatures in the winter and water pollution.
