Description 1

The squirrel family, with a large body, smooth, fine hair and big eyes. The front feet have 4 toes, and the back have 5. All with claws except for the thumb. Size varies depending on the species (from 10 grams to more than 3 kg). Colourings also range: black, white, brown, red and grey. Three basic morphologies: ground squirrels, tree squirrels and flying squirrels. In Spain, Atlantoxerus getulus are considered as invasive, and Tamias sibiricus and Sciurus carolinensis have the potential to be.

Biology 1

Daytime ground or tree habitats, they use dens, some hibernate and/or gather food for the winter. Gregarious or solitary. They feed on all types of plant matter (shoots, leaves, fruits, seeds, flowers, etc.), fungi, invertebrates, small amphibians, reptiles and birds' chicks. 25-40 days of gestation, 1-9 offspring per litter and 1-2 litters a year.
