Description 1

Deciduous, dioecious and strong-smelling tree, of up to 25-30 m in height. Superficial roots, composite divided leaves of variable length (0.6-1m) and with ovate-lanceolate leaflets of varying number. Small, greenish flowers that appear between April and July. Its fruit appears from September to October: these are 30x8 mm samaras, reddish-yellow in colour with the seed in the middle.

Biology 1

Rapid growth, living for 30-50 years. Sexual reproduction, with 300,000 samaras per adult female dispersed in the wind. The seeds germinate in a large number of environments and different ephatic conditions. Great resprouting capacity from roots. Leaves and bark have secondary metabolites with herbicide and insecticide effect.

Habitat 1

Urban and suburban environments, plots, riverbanks and roadsides as well as natural forest habitats. Can withstand a wide range of humidity, graininess, pH and concentration of nitrogen in the soil. Very tolerant of air contamination (SO2 and others).
